It was a successful title defense for the San Antonio Churchill Chargers.

Three of the Chargers’ “Red” team shot below 80 Saturday and helped Churchill defend its champions bracket title at the Del Rio High School Brown Automotive Boys Golf Invitational Tournament.

Saturday’s final round of the championship bracket was played on the San Felipe Country Club course. While the players faced a slight wind and cool temperatures all day, the fast greens caused most of the golfers to shoot a higher score on the tournament’s second day.

Only the team’s top four individual scores from each day were used to determine the team’s total score for that day.

Churchill finished Saturday’s final round with a team score of 317 and won the championship with a two-day total of 622.

Churchill’s team included Kasen Schneider (75, 76 – 151), Matt Rodriguez (74, 78 – 152), Anthony Cross (81, 78 – 159), Joey Silva (76, 87 – 163) and Michael Gebhardt (80, 85 – 165).

The Chargers finished 25 shots ahead of their nearest competitors from San Antonio Johnson. Johnson shot a 337 on Saturday and finished with a two-day total of 647.

Johnson’s team included Jake Judkins (71, 83 – 154), Justin Judkins (79, 80 – 159), Pearson Grant (79, 89 – 168), Phil Cremeans (81, 88 – 169) and Jon Lucas (88, 86 – 174).

Laredo St. Augustine finished third overall with a two-day team score of 651.

St. Augustine’s team included Eloy Gonzalez (74, 75 – 149), Rey Reyes (86, 77 – 163), Rogelio Jimenez (75, 91 – 166), Pedro Arguindegui (93, 90 – 173) and Enrique Ramirez (93, 96 – 189).

The rest of the team in the champions bracket included Churchill “Black” (665), Uvalde (679), San Antonio MacArthur (680), Del Rio (688), Eagle Pass C.C. Winn (752), El Paso Americas (762) and Laredo Alexander (778).

Uvalde was also awarded the Neto Hernandez Sportsmanship Award.

Del Rio fared worse on the tournament’s second day as three of the golfers on the team shot higher scores at the San Felipe course after Friday’s round at the Leaning Pine Golf Course on Laughlin Air Force Base.

Edwin Hyslop was the only Del Rio golfer to break 80 both days as he shot a 78 Saturday to finish with a two-day total of 157.

Matt Ortiz was the only other member of Del Rio’s team to shoot better on Saturday than on Friday as he shaved eight strokes of his Friday score and finished Saturday’s round with a 90. His two-day score was 188.

Joining Hyslop and Ortiz on the Del Rio team were Albert Rodriguez (81, 84 – 165), Michael Sondag (86, 95 – 181) and Mark Gutierrez (95, 112 – 207).

Del Rio also had three golfers who competed as medalists.

Cruz Edwin Hernandez shot a 95 Saturday and finished with a two-day total of 194. Al Lopez shot a 104 Saturday and finished with a 213. Joshua Cottle shot a 120 Saturday and finished with a 244.

St. Augustine’s Gonzalez was the top individual golfer in the champions bracket as he shot a 149 for the tournament. Churchill’s Schneider was second with a 151. His teammate Rodriguez was third with a 152. Johnson’s Jake Judkins was fourth with a 154 and Del Rio’s Hyslop was fifth with a 157.

Churchill wasn’t the only team to repeat as champions of the Brown Automotive tournament.

Eagle Pass High repeated as the tournament’s consolation champion as its five-man team shot a two-day score of 675 to win the bracket by 84 strokes over Laredo Martin.

Eagle Pass’ team shot a 332 Saturday to go along with its 343 Friday. They played Saturday’s round on the Leaning Pine course.

The five-man Eagles team included Pedro Gomez (86, 80 – 166), Daniel Venegas (83, 83 – 166), Jorge Olvera (88, 83 - 171), K.J. Hudson (86, 89 – 175) and Daniel Aguirre (95, 86 – 181).
